f/2.8 vs f/3.5: What the Aperture Difference Actually Means

On paper, f/2.8 and f/3.5 look almost identical — but f/2.8 gathers roughly 60% more light, about two-thirds of a stop. That's enough to matter in dim rooms, at events, and for isolating a subject against a soft background, but not always enough to justify the extra size, weight, and price that a faster aperture demands. This guide explains exactly what the gap buys you, and how to decide whether it's worth paying for.

How f-numbers work (the 30-second version)

An f-number is the ratio of a lens's focal length to the diameter of its aperture opening. Because it's a ratio, a smaller number means a wider opening and more light. So f/2.8 is "faster" (brighter) than f/3.5, even though 2.8 is the smaller number.

The standard full-stop sequence looks like this:

f/1.4 → f/2 → f/2.8 → f/4 → f/5.6 → f/8

Each full stop halves or doubles the light. Notice that f/3.5 sits between f/2.8 and f/4 — it's not a full stop, it's an in-between value.

The exact difference: two-thirds of a stop

Here's the precise math, because "two-thirds of a stop" is easy to say and easy to misjudge:

To reach the same exposure at f/3.5 that you'd get at f/2.8, you have to compensate by two-thirds of a stop somewhere else — a slower shutter or a higher ISO.

What two-thirds of a stop means in practice

Shutter speed. If f/2.8 lets you shoot at 1/60s, f/3.5 needs roughly 1/40s for the same brightness. In a room with moving people, that slower shutter is the difference between a sharp frame and motion blur.

ISO. Keep the shutter speed fixed instead, and f/3.5 forces you about two-thirds of a stop higher on ISO — say ISO 1600 where f/2.8 held ISO 1000. On a modern sensor that's often invisible; on an older or smaller sensor it can mean visibly more noise.

Depth of field. f/2.8 renders a slightly shallower depth of field, so backgrounds blur a little more and subjects separate a little better. But the effect of two-thirds of a stop is modest — far smaller than the jump you'd see going from f/3.5 to f/1.8. Focal length and how close you are to your subject move background blur far more than this particular aperture gap does.

The real-world context: constant vs variable aperture

Most of the time you don't actually compare a fixed f/2.8 against a fixed f/3.5. You compare two types of lens:

  • f/3.5 is usually the wide end of a variable-aperture kit zoom — something like an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. The "f/3.5" only applies at the widest focal length. Zoom in and the maximum aperture shrinks to f/5.6, costing you another full stop of light exactly when a longer focal length already makes camera shake worse.
  • f/2.8 usually means a constant-aperture zoom — a 24-70mm f/2.8 or 70-200mm f/2.8 that holds f/2.8 across the entire zoom range. The aperture never changes as you zoom, so exposure and depth of field stay predictable.

So the honest comparison is often "a light, cheap kit zoom that dims as you zoom" versus "a heavier, pricier pro zoom that stays bright throughout." That reframing matters more than the headline 2.8-vs-3.5 number.

When f/3.5 is perfectly fine

  • You shoot mostly in good light — outdoors, daytime, or well-lit interiors.
  • You value light weight and low cost — a variable-aperture zoom is smaller, lighter, and often a third of the price.
  • You mostly shoot landscapes, travel, or general snapshots, where you're stopping down to f/8 anyway and maximum aperture barely comes into play.
  • Your camera has strong stabilisation, which claws back several stops of hand-holdability and softens the low-light penalty.

When f/2.8 is worth paying for

  • Indoor events, weddings, and receptions — dim, unrepeatable moments where two-thirds of a stop plus a constant aperture keeps shutter speeds high enough to freeze motion.
  • Video in mixed lighting, where a constant aperture means your exposure doesn't jump every time you zoom.
  • Portraits and subject isolation, where you want the background to fall away — though a fast prime like an f/1.8 does this far more dramatically for less money.
  • Low-light sports and reportage, where you're already pushing ISO and can't afford to give away light.

The trade-off you're really paying for

A faster aperture isn't free. A constant f/2.8 zoom is typically larger, heavier, and two to three times more expensive than the equivalent variable-aperture zoom. The question is never "is f/2.8 better?" — of course it gathers more light — it's "is two-thirds of a stop plus a constant aperture worth the size, weight, and price for what I actually shoot?"

If you frequently shoot indoors or in low light, the answer is usually yes. If you're mostly a daylight, travel, or landscape shooter, that money often buys more real-world improvement spent on a fast prime or a second focal length instead.

How to decide

The fastest way to see the trade-off is to line up specific lenses side by side and compare aperture, weight, and price together rather than in isolation:

  • Browse everything by mount and filter by maximum aperture on the camera lens finder.
  • Put two candidates head to head — a kit zoom against a constant f/2.8 — with the side-by-side lens comparison tool.
  • Narrow to your exact system first, e.g. Sony FE lenses, Canon RF lenses, or Nikon Z lenses.
